What is an ICU diary?

Type of Library Material:

Medical Journal

Brief description of media:

In the UK, Scandinavia, and other European countries, patient diaries are being explored as a low-cost technology to improve the quality of life after critical illness and mechanical ventilation (Combe, 2005; Egerod et al., 2007). Entries into the intensive care diary are made by nurses and in some countries also by relatives during the patient's stay. In other countries relatives are encouraged to write separate diaries (Gjengedal et al.,2010). The diary is written in everyday language and contains daily entries on the current patient status and descriptions of situations and surroundings in which the patient might find recognition. The text is often supported by photos. It is written directly to the patient, using an empathetic and reflective style and therapeutic communication (Roulin et al., 2007).

What Is Post–Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS)?

Type of Library Material:

One-Pager

Brief description of media:

Post–intensive care syndrome (PICS) is a group of problems that people can experience after surviving a life-threatening illness. More than half (50 percent) of all people who survive a hospital stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) will have at least one of the problems seen with PICS. These problems can greatly affect the lives of survivors of critical illness. Problems can be physical or mental and may affect one’s ability to think or function in daily life. Many patients are unable to return work and do not have the same energy level that they had before their illness. This fact sheet will review common problems seen with PICS as well as ways to try to prevent and treat these problems.

What we know about the long term consequences of getting COVID-19

Type of Library Material:

Newspaper Article

Brief description of media:

Sometimes it seems like every article about the coronavirus is trying to scare you. That’s especially true for articles about the long-term impacts of COVID-19. They tend to start the same way: introducing you to someone whose life was terrific before the virus and terrible now, due to some unexpected remaining symptom. There’s a transition sentence — “But Chad isn’t alone” — telling you that other people have this happen to them too. Doctors are interviewed about how likely this is, studies are referenced to the degree possible. Finally, the article returns to Chad, who just wishes he hadn’t gone to that get-together where he caught the virus in the first place.

What We Know About the Long-Term Effects of COVID-19

Type of Library Material:

Magazine Article

Brief description of media:

Patients with COVID-19 who developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) could have a greater risk of long-term health issues. Additionally, people requiring intensive care are at increased risk for mental health issues like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. Impaired lung function from SARS-CoV-2 infection can negatively affect other organs like the heart, kidneys, and brain, with significant health impacts that may last after getting over the infection.

When ICU Delirium Leads To Symptoms Of Dementia After Discharge

Type of Library Material:

Newspaper Article

Brief description of media:

Doctors have gradually come to realize that people who survive a serious brush with death in the intensive care unit are likely to develop potentially serious problems with their memory and thinking processes. This dementia, a side effect of intensive medical care, can be permanent. And it affects as many as half of all people who are rushed to the ICU after a medical emergency. Considering that 5.7 million Americans end up in intensive care every year, this is a major problem that until recently, has been poorly appreciated by medical caregivers.

When perception may not meet reality: sleep and delirium in the ICU.

Type of Library Material:

Medical Journal

Brief description of media:

The delirium diagnosed with shockingly high frequency in critically ill patients seems to be iatrogenic all too often. Without an effective way to treat it, we are left with prevention as the primary strategy with all other intervention reactive and unproven. It is in this spirit of prevention that sleep disruption is being investigated as a potentially modifiable risk factor for the development of ICU delirium.

Why 'presumed recovered' doesn't mean you're done with the coronavirus

Type of Library Material:

Newspaper Article

Brief description of media:

Young, healthy people can suffer for far longer than even a bad flu, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study found. One in five adults between the ages of 18 and 34 said they didn't feel back to normal two or three weeks after their diagnosis. "A lot of people don't realize, even if the virus is gone, that doesn't mean you're done with it," said Sullivan. "It's done its damage."
